Prescription costs continue to climb in Mexico. Even as overall inflation fell to 3.12% in July, INEGI data shows several common medications – including antibiotics, cardiovascular drugs, gastrointestinal medications, and diabetes drugs – have been rising faster than inflation for months.

But where you fill your prescription can make a difference. Mexico’s major pharmacy chains offer some surprisingly good discounts and loyalty programs. If you take medication regularly, these can add up.

  • Farmacias Guadalajara: Their Compras Recurrentes program is particularly useful for medications you refill regularly. Schedule automatic deliveries of participating products and get 10% or 20% off, plus free delivery.

  • Farmacias Similares (Dr. Simi): Monday is the day to shop. Their Buen Lunes program gives you 25% off participating products every Monday, with a maximum discount of $1,250 pesos per person, per transaction.

  • Farmacias del Ahorro: The Monedero del Ahorro loyalty program lets you earn store credit on participating purchases, plus access Acumula y Gana deals where buying the same participating medication multiple times can earn you a free one.

  • Farmacias YZA: Their free Cuídate Mucho program offers discounts, credit toward future purchases, and special deals on participating medications, including chronic-care products.

  • Benavides: If you’re 55+, Benavides Recompensas offers 10% off selected prescription and OTC products on Mondays and 5% off Tuesday through Sunday, plus points and other member promotions.

Tip: Taking the same medication every month? Check prices at a few pharmacies before refilling. Prices and promotions can vary considerably between chains.

IMSS Prescription Benefits

If you’re enrolled in IMSS, many medications prescribed through the system are available through IMSS pharmacies.

If you have a controlled chronic condition, ask about Receta Resurtible. Eligible patients can get three monthly prescriptions from a single doctor’s visit, cutting routine appointments from once a month to once every three months.
